Australia sees stronger tourism partnership following PM Modi's Australia visit

Industry stakeholders believe that sustained government engagement, coupled with stronger business partnerships, could further accelerate travel flows and unlock new opportunities for tourism operators and investors in both markets.

Business leaders in Australia have reportedly expressed optimism about expanding economic and tourism collaboration with India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the India-Australia CEO Forum during his visit to the country.

The discussions highlighted opportunities for deeper engagement across sectors including tourism, critical minerals, clean energy and green hydrogen, with industry representatives describing the bilateral relationship as one with significant untapped potential.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Australia as part of the second leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour and joined Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the India-Australia CEO Forum and Economic Roadmap Business Reception, where both leaders interacted with business executives from the two countries.

Peter Shelley, Managing Director of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), said the forum reinforced the growing importance of tourism within the broader India-Australia partnership. "The biggest takeaway is the opportunity for Australia and India, especially in tourism," Shelley said.

He noted that interest between the two countries continues to grow across multiple sectors, with tourism emerging as one of the strongest areas of engagement.

"I think the interest is already very strong across many dimensions and, in the tourism context, we just keep seeing Indian tourism building and building all the time, and we're really excited about that," he added.
