West Bengal has attracted tourism investment proposals worth approximately INR 12,534 crore. Announcing the developments at a tourism investors’ meet organised by the state’s Tourism Department on World Tourism Day, Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh outlined plans to expand and upgrade the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Limited’s (WBTDCL) accommodation portfolio.
According to online reports, projects are expected to generate nearly 22,000 employment opportunities across the sector. The corporation intends to double its lodging capacity from 800 to 1,600 rooms, with an additional 800 rooms planned to cater to rising demand. All existing rooms will also undergo renovation as part of the upgrade.
Ghosh said the proposed investments would help accelerate tourism development in the state and strengthen its positioning in the international tourism market. He also assured investors of the government’s support in addressing challenges and facilitating the implementation of their projects.
Reiterating the state’s ambition to enhance its global tourism presence, the Minister said further investment proposals were anticipated in the coming months. He added that West Bengal’s tourism policy had been submitted to the Group of Ministers and was expected to be announced alongside the state’s industrial policy before the Puja festivities.
Among the major announcements, Ambuja Neotia Group proposed an investment of INR 3,015 crore in the hotel sector. Other investors also presented plans for projects spanning tea tourism, hospitality and wellness resorts, reflecting growing interest in West Bengal’s tourism potential.
