UP launches statewide review of tourism projects with focus on ground verification

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a comprehensive review of tourism and religious infrastructure projects across all 18 administrative divisions, introducing a field-based evaluation system aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and the effective utilisation of public funds.
The statewide exercise commenced on Monday, with an assessment of proposals from the Agra and Aligarh divisions, where authorities are to examine 80 tourism and religious infrastructure projects collectively valued at over INR 500 crore. The review marks the beginning of the state's appraisal process for tourism development initiatives planned for the 2026–27 financial year.
According to online reports, the new approach places greater emphasis on on-site verification, moving away from the traditional practice of relying solely on departmental presentations. Each proposal is being evaluated on parameters such as land ownership, project readiness, technical feasibility, historical or religious significance, and its overall value to visitors as well as local communities before being considered for approval.
The process also incorporates inputs from legislators, district administrations and implementing agencies to ensure that proposed developments reflect local priorities and practical requirements.
According to officials, the Agra division alone submitted 58 tourism-related proposals with an estimated investment of around INR 273 crore. In addition, the Religious Affairs Department presented three major projects in Mathura worth nearly INR 245 crore, taking the total value of projects reviewed during the first phase to more than INR 500 crore.
Among the key proposals are the integrated development of the Baldev Tirth Kshetra, including a tourism facilitation centre and improved road connectivity, restoration of 36 religiously significant forests, conservation works at the historic Keshav Qila precinct, development of the Gokul Parikrama route and the Yamuna riverfront, and the rejuvenation of Hansa Rani Ghat in Mathura.
The review also covers tourism projects currently under execution in Mathura, valued at nearly INR 91 crore. Officials sought detailed updates on both the physical progress and financial utilisation of these works. In Agra district, proposals under consideration include the second phase of heritage conservation at Bateshwar Dham, development of visitor amenities at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial, restoration of Kothi Meena Bazaar, and the creation of parking facilities and tourist infrastructure around prominent heritage attractions.
