The comprehensive makeover is expected to strengthen Someshwara Beach's appeal as a coastal tourism destination while enhancing facilities for both residents and visitors.
The development of Someshwara Beach in Byndoor, located at the northern end of Karnataka's Udupi district, is nearing completion. The tourism infrastructure project, being executed by Karnataka Tourism Infrastructure Limited (KTIL), is being undertaken at an estimated cost of INR 11.32 crore.
As per the reports, KTIL initiated the project in 2023 to upgrade tourism infrastructure and improve visitor amenities at the beach, which forms part of the Udupi–Kollur–Murdeshwar–Gokarna coastal tourism circuit.
The development project comprises a range of infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of retaining walls, stormwater drainage systems, pathways, galleries, renovated restrooms, restoration of the temple tank (Kalyani), improved lighting, parking facilities and dedicated seating areas to enhance the overall visitor experience.
The reports further stated that limited government land availability near the beach prompted the Tourism Department to acquire around 2.7 acres of land, while additional parcels were purchased where acquisition was not feasible. One of the initial works involved constructing an approximately 300-metre-long concrete wall near the Someshwara Temple to safeguard the coastline from erosion.
The comprehensive makeover is expected to strengthen Someshwara Beach's appeal as a coastal tourism destination while enhancing facilities for both residents and visitors.
