Munnar to boost tourism with infrastructure & facilities upgrade

Kerala govt. with local self-government bodies, planning to introduce modern public sanitation facilities at major tourist sites and strengthening waste management systems across the destination.
According to online reports, Munnar is set to witness a significant upgrade in its tourism infrastructure as the Kerala government explores a series of initiatives aimed at improving visitor facilities, traffic management and sustainable destination development.
The proposals were discussed during a recent meeting involving tourism stakeholders, where authorities reviewed key challenges impacting the hill destination and outlined plans to strengthen the overall visitor experience.
As per reports, priority areas include enhancing tourist safety measures, introducing structured training programmes for guides through the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), and creating additional parking infrastructure to address growing congestion. Officials are also reportedly examining the possibility of utilising suitable government land for future parking projects.
The Tourism Department, in coordination with local self-government bodies, is also planning to improve civic amenities by introducing modern public sanitation facilities at major tourist sites and strengthening waste management systems across the destination.
Traffic congestion emerged as a major area of concern during the discussions. According to reports, stakeholders proposed exploring an elevated road corridor as a long-term solution to ease vehicular movement in and around Munnar. The proposal is expected to be taken up with the relevant highway authorities for further consideration.
At the same time, officials stressed the importance of ensuring that tourism growth remains aligned with environmental conservation, given Munnar’s ecological sensitivity.
According to figures shared during the meeting, Munnar welcomed nearly 30 million visitors in 2025. The proposed initiatives are aimed to support future growth while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
