J&K plans reopening of tourist destinations by May; strengthens adventure tourism push

The government is looking at developing offbeat destinations and expanding tourism-led employment opportunities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Omar Abdullah, J&K Chief Minister, has announced that all tourist destinations currently closed across Jammu and Kashmir are expected to reopen by May, as the Union Territory intensifies efforts to revive and expand its tourism sector.
According to online reports, the Chief Minister said the government is simultaneously working on plans to introduce nine new tourist destinations aimed at broadening the region’s tourism offerings and reducing pressure on existing hotspots.
Abdullah stated that the administration adopted a phased and strategic approach to restore confidence in Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector following the terror attack in Pahalgam. He emphasised that the government remains focused on strengthening tourism infrastructure in key destinations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg, while also accelerating work on major tourism-related projects across the Union Territory.
At the same time, as per online reports, Sakeena Itoo, Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, inaugurated a Tourism Capacity Building Camp at Panchanpatri, Kulgam, and flagged off an All-Terrain Rally, trekkers’ expedition and cycle rally aimed at promoting adventure tourism in the region.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister said the government is focused on developing offbeat destinations and expanding tourism-led employment opportunities across Jammu and Kashmir. She added that promoting unexplored destinations would help generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities while increasing youth participation in the tourism sector.
The programme reportedly witnessed participation from tourism stakeholders, travel operators, local representatives and youth, alongside trekking, cycling and other adventure activities showcasing the tourism potential of Panchanpatri and adjoining areas.
