J&K approves AYUSH action plan; eyes wellness tourism growth

The region is said to be well positioned to emerge as a leading destination for wellness and healthcare tourism.

Jammu & Kashmir has approved its State Annual Action Plan (SAAP) for 2026–27 under the National AYUSH Mission (NAM), with a renewed focus on expanding holistic healthcare services and leveraging the Union Territory’s potential as a wellness tourism destination.

The approval was granted during a meeting of the Governing Body of the J&K AYUSH Society, chaired by Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary. The plan will now be forwarded to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, for further consideration.

During the meeting, Dulloo underscored the increasing role of AYUSH systems in preventive healthcare and overall well-being. He advocated the development of a comprehensive wellness policy in partnership with private sector stakeholders, noting that the wellness tourism segment has witnessed significant growth nationwide.

Highlighting Jammu & Kashmir’s natural and tourism assets, he said the region is well positioned to emerge as a leading destination for wellness and healthcare tourism. He called for concerted efforts to enhance the UT’s visibility and appeal in this growing sector.

To strengthen access to traditional healthcare services, the Chief Secretary directed officials to make key AYUSH public welfare programmes available across all medical colleges and district hospitals in Jammu & Kashmir.

He also emphasised the importance of effective oversight and instructed the department to conduct regular inspections of AYUSH healthcare centres and educational institutions to ensure operational efficiency and maintain service standards.
