Assam plans 5 new ropeway links to strengthen tourism connectivity

The initiative is expected to make tourist and pilgrimage sites more accessible while offering additional connectivity options across Assam.

Assam is set to expand its tourism and transport infrastructure with 5 proposed ropeway projects aimed at improving access to prominent religious sites, natural attractions and key urban locations across the state.

The Assam Cabinet has proposed the Central Government to establish a joint Ropeway Development Authority to oversee the development of the projects. According to online reports, under the proposed partnership, the Centre will hold a 51% stake in the joint venture, while the Assam Government will retain the remaining 49%.

The proposed network will cover Guwahati, Cachar, Dima Hasao and Sonitpur districts, with two ropeway connections planned within Guwahati.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Kamakhya Railway Station–Kamakhya Temple project has made considerable progress. The other four proposals are currently at the pre-Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage.

The initiative is expected to make tourist and pilgrimage sites more accessible while offering additional connectivity options across Assam. By linking important destinations through ropeway infrastructure, the state aims to strengthen its tourism appeal and facilitate smoother movement for visitors and residents.
