Maharishi Bhrigu Ashram in Ballia
The district recorded more than 10.31 lakh tourist visits in 2025, providing a foundation for bringing its religious and cultural destinations to wider attention.
Uttar Pradesh is widening its spiritual tourism offering in the east, with work underway on an INR 8.74 crore project at Maharishi Bhrigu Ashram in Ballia. The development will combine better pilgrim facilities with cultural storytelling, giving the district’s ancient association with the sage a stronger place in the state’s tourism network.
The project is being undertaken under the Chief Minister’s Tourism Destination Development Scheme. The effort is to connect the site’s religious significance with a visitor experience that introduces travellers to its wider cultural inheritance.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s guidance, Uttar Pradesh is developing its religious and spiritual destinations while honouring their ancient cultural significance. Maharishi Bhrigu’s tapobhoomi has long been a centre of devotion. Its development will give pilgrims and tourists better facilities and an opportunity to understand the heritage associated with the sage. Work has begun on the ground to strengthen this important destination and encourage tourism activity in Ballia.”
For devotees and families, the development will provide sheltered spaces to rest and clearer signage to navigate the premises. A grand entrance gateway and a two-storey multipurpose hall are also planned. Wall art, murals and a light and sound show will present Maharishi Bhrigu’s legacy, helping visitors understand the traditions associated with the ashram alongside their pilgrimage.
The initiative strengthens the tourism identity of a district widely remembered for its contribution to India’s freedom struggle. Situated along Uttar Pradesh’s border with Bihar, Ballia also has traditions associated with Maharishi Valmiki. The district recorded more than 10.31 lakh tourist visits in 2025, providing a foundation for bringing its religious and cultural destinations to wider attention.
Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat said, “Once ready, the redeveloped Maharishi Bhrigu Ashram will be an important part of Uttar Pradesh’s Adhyatmik tourism circuit. We are combining visitor facilities with the preservation and presentation of the site’s cultural heritage so that travellers can experience its significance more closely. The development will encourage local tourism activity, create employment and economic opportunities, and strengthen the ‘Visit My State’ campaign by bringing Ballia’s spiritual inheritance to a wider audience.”
