Telangana begins master planning for 27 tourism areas; 8 destinations in first phase

The eight locations identified for the initial phase include Vikarabad, the Somasila-Alampur circuit, Warangal-Ramappa, Nagarjunasagar, Yadadri-Pochampally, the Adilabad Tribal Cluster, Bhadrachalam and Kaleshwaram.

The Telangana government has initiated the preparation of detailed master plans for eight tourism destinations as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the state's tourism infrastructure and visitor offerings.

The initiative forms the first phase of a larger programme covering 27 Special Tourism Areas identified under the state's tourism policy. A review meeting involving tourism officials, architects, engineers and consultants was held in Hyderabad to assess development strategies for the selected destinations.

According to online reports, Minister Jupally Krishna Rao emphasised the need for destination-specific development plans that go beyond traditional sightseeing and create immersive experiences capable of attracting longer visitor stays. The proposed plans are expected to focus on heritage, nature, spirituality, culture and adventure tourism.

As part of the planning process, officials have been asked to examine successful tourism projects from different parts of the world and incorporate relevant ideas suited to Telangana's destinations. The government is also exploring opportunities around Bhongir Fort, with the surrounding hill landscape being assessed for potential heritage and adventure tourism projects.

Among the priority destinations, the Somasila-Alampur tourism circuit has emerged as a key focus area due to its potential for water-based and experiential tourism. Proposed activities include cruise tourism, water sports, trekking routes, eco-tourism experiences and destination weddings. Plans are also being explored to integrate nearby heritage and religious attractions, including Jataprolu and the Madanagopala Swamy Temple, with the Krishna backwaters tourism circuit.

The master plans are expected to serve as the blueprint for future investments and infrastructure development aimed at positioning Telangana as a diverse and experience-driven tourism destination.
