Summer travel season takes off, an estimated 147,000 passengers travel through SFO on day one

New facilities ready to welcome summer travellers as runway construction continues. The final phase of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 opens June 11th and Terminal 3 West modernization project begins in July. Alaska Airlines moving in operation to Harvey Milk Terminal 1, whereas United to operate more flights in Terminal 2.

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) highlighted the upcoming start of the summer travel season with key updates on airport and terminal development, movement of airline operations, as well as tips for passengers, information on parking, newly-completed facilities, and a program of live music in the terminals.

The summer travel season began in earnest on Friday, May 24, 2024, with an estimated approximately 147,000 passengers traveling through SFO on that day. In total, 15.5 million travelers are expected at SFO between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which represents about 86% of pre-pandemic summer travel levels.

Harvey Milk Terminal Openning
The final phase of the $2.4B Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is scheduled to open on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, featuring a new check-in area, a new mezzanine-level security checkpoint immediately accessible from the AirTrain system, two new gates, five new concessions, a new common-use lounge, a new museum gallery, and a connecting walkway linking every SFO terminal post-security.

At the same time, Alaska Airlines is scheduled to move its full operation, including check-in ticket counter, gates and baggage services, from Terminal 2 into Harvey Milk Terminal 1 in late June. Alaska will be located near American Airlines and other oneworld member airlines, providing convenience for guests who have connecting domestic and international flights. Alaska’s new lobby will boast new technology that will allow guests to get through the check-in process more efficiently and give them more time to relax in Alaska’s new lounge (also opening this summer) and enjoy new amenities in Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

Terminal 3 West modernization begins in July

In July, SFO will officially begin construction on the $2.5B Terminal 3 West Modernization project, which will renovate the existing 500,000 square foot western half of Terminal 3, including a seismic retrofit, an expanded security checkpoint and new passenger amenities. The project will also create 250,000 square feet of additional space, allowing for expanded food, beverage, and retail concessions. During this project, United Airlines will operate a larger number of flights in Terminal 2, and new temporary walkways will open to route passengers around the construction area.

Runway closure
The closure of Runway 28 Left for a taxiway improvement project is scheduled to be completed no later than July 1st. Airlines have already reduced flights to accommodate the closure, but SFO advises travelers that delays are still possible until the runway reopens no later than July 1st.

SFO Celebrates
SFO’s experiential series that brings San Francisco’s neighborhoods and cultural events directly to airport guests. The “SFO Celebrates” program features live performances, music, demonstrations and arts & crafts.”
