The Odisha Government is stepping up efforts to expand tourism beyond established destinations, directing every district to develop five to 10 small-scale tourism initiatives as part of a new district-led development approach.
According to online reports, the directive was issued by Chief Secretary Anu Garg while chairing a virtual orientation programme for Local Tourism Promotion Councils (LTPCs), organised by the Odisha Tourism Department under the state’s Tourism Vision 2036-47. The initiative, titled “One District-Multiple Tourism Initiatives”, is aimed at using local tourism assets to strengthen rural economies and create wider livelihood opportunities.
Garg called on district administrations to identify emerging attractions, heritage properties, natural assets and homestay opportunities that could be developed into tourism products. Alongside destination development, she emphasised the need to strengthen cleanliness, basic visitor facilities, hospitality standards and supporting infrastructure.
The district-focused model is also expected to generate employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for local communities, with particular emphasis on women, youth and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). By encouraging smaller tourism projects at the grassroots level, the Government aims to create a broader and more locally driven tourism ecosystem across Odisha.
