The Northeast is emerging as a key contributor to India's future tourism and travel economy, supported by rapid infrastructure development, enhanced connectivity and a rich mix of cultural and natural attractions, according to Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
According to online reports, speaking at the Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition 2026 held in Shillong, Meghalaya, on June 15-16, Shekhawat said the region is well-positioned to play a leading role in the country's tourism growth story.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the Northeast as "Ashtalakshmi", the minister noted that sustained investments in infrastructure and connectivity are helping unlock the region's tourism potential.
According to online reports, Shekhawat highlighted that the Northeast offers a wide range of experiences for travellers, combining scenic landscapes with distinctive cultural traditions, handicrafts and culinary offerings.
The summit, described as a first-of-its-kind gathering for the region, brought together hundreds of delegates from Northeastern state governments, industry stakeholders and infrastructure experts at Shillong's Lariti Performing Centre to discuss development opportunities and future growth.
According to online reports, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal also addressed the event and underscored the growing strategic importance of the Northeast in India's development agenda.
Sonowal reportedly said the region has evolved into a pivotal growth centre for the country, adding that the "Ashtalakshmi" vision is progressing rapidly and contributing towards an inclusive, sustainable and globally competitive future.
