Maharashtra unveils India’s first underwater museum in Sindhudurg

Maharashtra is set to introduce India’s first submarine tourism project off the Sindhudurg coast, marking a major step towards strengthening marine and adventure tourism. According to online reports, the ambitious project has now received updated Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance, subject to certain conditions.
The project, is reported to be developed under the supervision of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, at an investment of INR 112.46 crore.
As part of the initiative, an underwater museum and artificial reef will be created near Sindhudurg on the Konkan coastline. The structure is planned to be installed nearly 22 metres below sea level and is expected to emerge as a key attraction for scuba divers, marine explorers and adventure travellers.
Reports stated that the authorities believe the initiative could significantly boost coastal tourism in Maharashtra while also promoting ecological preservation through the development of artificial reef systems.
