Kazakhstan’s Karaganda Region is considering a major expansion of the Saryarka Special Economic Zone (SEZ), with plans to establish three additional sub-zones across Balkhash, Karkaraly and Bukhar-Zhyrau. The proposed development is expected to attract investments of approximately KZT 90 billion and generate nearly 2,000 employment opportunities.
The zone's territory has increased by 145 hectares to a total of 1,416.626 hectares, according to Qazinform News Agency reports. A key amendment adds tourism development to the SEZ's official objectives, with a focus on boosting the region's tourism potential and developing competitive infrastructure for both domestic and international visitors. Under the resolution, the Saryarka SEZ covers parts of Karaganda and Balkhash cities, as well as Bukhar-Zhyrau and Karkaraly districts in Karaganda region, including Sary-Arka Airport.
The expansion will include two locations dedicated to tourism development, while the third will comprise a 40-hectare industrial site. The proposed additions are aimed at broadening the economic activities supported by the SEZ, with tourism emerging as one of the key focus areas.
Previously, the zone's main priorities included developing the metallurgical and metalworking industries, attracting manufacturers, expanding raw material processing, and producing competitive, high-value-added products.
