Monsoon travel in India is revealing distinctly different patterns across regions, with weather, religious occasions and the purpose of travel influencing where people choose to go. While the season is driving interest in hill and pilgrimage destinations across the North, intercity travel in the South remains relatively resilient, with leisure corridors such as Bengaluru–Goa also continuing to see strong movement, according to travel trends observed by FlixBus. FlixBus’ Delhi–Haridwar corridor, its busiest route, recorded 150% year-on-year growth in searches on the Flixbus platform in July, amid increased fleet capacity and strong demand.
The Sawan season and Kanwar Yatra are contributing to increased movement towards pilgrimage destinations, while the monsoon is also encouraging travellers to seek out hill destinations. The Delhi–Katra corridor also saw 28% year-on-year growth in searches while searches for Delhi–Dharamshala increased 20% year-on-year in July, indicating continued interest in pilgrimage and monsoon hill travel. Parts of Rajasthan such as Jaipur and Udaipur also continue to attract travellers looking for short leisure and heritage breaks during the season.
Tier 1-to-Tier 1 routes continue to see steady travel, while connectivity between major cities remains active through the monsoon. The Bengaluru–Chennai corridor saw a 25% increase in searches from May to June 2026, reflecting continued movement between two major urban centres.
At the same time, monsoon conditions are not necessarily dampening leisure travel from the South. The Bengaluru–Goa corridor recorded a 46% increase in searches from May to June 2026, pointing to continued interest in shorter leisure travels to rain-washed landscapes in Goa, relaxed itineraries and food and cultural experiences.
The regional variation reflects how monsoon conditions are influencing not just the volume of travel, but also the types of journeys travellers choose to undertake. Rather than resulting in a uniform slowdown, the season is shifting demand towards destinations and routes that are more suited to the weather.
Surya Khurana, Managing Director, FlixBus India, said, “The monsoon season gives us an interesting window into how Indian travellers are increasingly making their journeys more purposeful and experience-led. What is particularly interesting is the regional diversity in these choices, with travel preferences shaped by local occasions, weather and the kind of experience travellers are looking for. With FlixBus’s intercity network connecting hundreds of cities, we’re able to see these shifts across destinations and use these insights to better understand where travellers want to go and the kinds of journeys they are choosing.”
