Defining ‘Investments for a Sustainable Future’ on World Tourism Day 2023

World Tourism Day 2023 celebrates ‘Investments for a Sustainable Future’, urging us to forge responsible paths in travel. Stakeholders in the travel and tourism domain across the globe, embark on journeys that not only enrich the definition of tourism, but also safeguard the planet for generations to come.

T3 collates the opinions of stakeholder on World Tourism Day 2023:

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of the UNWTO

“Global tourism is on track to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of year. By investing in people and projects that make a difference, we can deliver on the sector’s potential to drive growth and opportunity for all. Our sector gives them the chance to make a living. To earn not just a wage, but also dignity and equality. Tourism jobs also empower people and provide a chance to have a stake in their own societies – often for the first time.”

Prabuddha Sen, COO-South Asia, VFS Global

World Tourism Day stands as a testament to the key role that tourism plays in uniting diverse communities and celebrating the remarkable strides, we’ve taken in connecting our global family. It serves as a reminder to all stakeholders of the imperative to cultivate a sustainable environment, one that nurtures the ongoing growth of tourism while ensuring its benefits are equitably distributed among communities with both economic and social interests in its future.

Our mission resonates with this year’s theme, ‘Tourism and Green Investment.’ We’ve undertaken an array of initiatives and they include a remarkable 40% reduction in our carbon footprint since 2019. By the end of 2023, we are steadfast in our commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources in numerous nations, with a visionary goal of reducing our carbon footprint intensity by a commendable 10%.

Our industry’s choices are intertwined with our planet’s fate, a truth I hold close to my heart on World Tourism Day. What are we leaving behind for the next generations and thereafter, is what we need to remain mindful of, at every step of our current lives…

Sakari Romu, General Manager – Finnair

“Achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 is our pledge, and we’re achieving this through a multi-pronged approach – that includes reducing the weight of aircraft, developing fuel-efficient flight methods, using sustainable aviation fuels and offsets, and engaging customers in reducing aviation emissions. To foster awareness about a Sustainable Tomorrow, knowledge sharing, and collaboration between different stakeholders are paramount. India, with its incredible cultural and natural treasures, stands at the brink of global tourism, and we’re eager to be part of its journey toward a more sustainable future.”

Deep Banka, Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Zostel

“On World Tourism Day, ‘Investments for a sustainable future’ take on a deep significance. It’s about dedicating our resources and efforts to causes that ensure the long-term survival of the tourism industry while minimizing the harm it may cause to the environment and communities. For Zostel, this translates into putting our money where our values are. We’re passionate about supporting local communities through responsible tourism initiatives and strongly advocate for sustainable travel choices with our community. We actively engage with local communities to enable more people to discover and understand what responsible tourism is and its positive impacts. Our continued focus lies on responsible travel to build a sustainable future.”

Shoba Rudra, Founder, RARE India

“Tourism and Travel is no exception, taking into account that tourism and all allied activity contribute to over 8% of carbon emissions. Before investments for future, we need to commit to being responsible world citizens and take accountability for our actions such as the excesses and irresponsible behavior that contribute to everything that leads to the explosion of carbon in the atmosphere, affluents and uncontrollable non-degradable waste and pollutants. As an industry, we need to build awareness for ourselves and make the right choices. We also need to constantly question every claim that is made; as the conversation around responsible tourism and sustainability increases, the chances of businesses laying unqualified claims to ‘zero waste’ and ‘net zero’ increase. One question we have to ask is are we adding to the problem? And can we be a part of the solution?”

Shikhar Aggarwal, Joint Managing Director, BLS International

“On World Tourism Day, Investments for a sustainable future embodies our dedication to fostering an industry that balances economic growth with environmental and societal well-being. To contribute to a sustainable tomorrow, we should encourage travellers to be more environmentally aware, engage in policy advocacy for sustainable tourism, and integrate sustainability into our business model. Over this decade, Tourism and Trade have undergone a transformative shift towards sustainability, marked by heightened awareness of environmental and social responsibilities. To revolutionize travel, we must embrace cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, prioritize environmentally friendly travel experiences, and pursue an equitable and inclusive industry. India stands at the cusp of global tourism, boasting a rich cultural tapestry and natural wonders, but it must address sustainability concerns, invest in infrastructure, and skill development to secure a prominent global position.”

Rohit Sethi, Co-Founder, Seclude Hotels Home Style
