Brazil records USD 8.3bn in foreign tourist spending through September

The growth in tourism revenue reportedly coincided with Brazil welcoming more than 7 million international visitors during the first nine months of the year.

Brazil’s tourism sector has recorded a strong rise in international visitor spending, with foreign tourists contributing USD 8.3 billion to the economy between January and September 2026, marking a 9.1% increase over the corresponding period last year.

According to online reports, September generated USD 904.7 million in international tourism receipts. This represented an 8.3% year-on-year increase and the highest September figure on record.

The growth in tourism revenue reportedly coincided with Brazil welcoming more than 7 million international visitors during the first nine months of the year, reinforcing the destination’s performance in attracting overseas travellers.

Bruno Reis, President, Embratur, highlighted the wider economic impact of the figures, noting that visitor expenditure supports businesses and livelihoods across the tourism value chain, including tour guides, hotels, restaurants, tour operators and retailers.

He attributed the increase in average visitor spending partly to Brazil’s efforts to diversify its international source markets through Plano Brasis, the country’s international tourism marketing strategy.

Covering the 2025–2027 period, Plano Brasis identifies 23 strategic markets for attracting international visitors and strengthening Brazil’s positioning in overseas markets.

According to Embratur, the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil registered the largest increases in international tourist arrivals, pointing to growing opportunities for tourism businesses across these parts of the country.
