Uttarakahnd to celebrate Sir George Everest day

On the birth anniversary of Sir George Everest, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board is celebrating Sir George Everest Day on 4th July, 2017 at Hotel Garhwal Terrace, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. The celebration will start at 11.00 am in the gracious presence of Satpal Maharaj, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Irrigation, Uttarakhand as the Chief Guest of the function and presided over by Ganesh Joshi, MLA, Mussoorie.

The celebration includes some of the major exciting activities like Mountain Biking, Adventure Sports, Heritage Walk, Photo Exhibition and Cultural Programmes. The day will close by felicitating all the recent Mount Everest Climbers.

The first Surveyor General of India, Sir George Everest purchased a house from General Whish in the city of Mussoorie. While he bought the home without even seeing it first hand, he fell in love with the place, and continued to live for a good 11 years. The home of Sir George Everest in Mussoorie lies on top of the Hathipaon Hill, which is located at 7809 feet above the sea level. In the year 1839, he converted this home into a ‘laboratory’. In 1865, Mount Everest was named in his honour.
