Digital travel platform Agoda’s 2025 Sustainable Travel Survey reveals India as the second most sustainability-conscious travel market in Asia, with over four in five Indian travellers (82%) factoring sustainability into their 2025 travel plans, higher than the average for all Asian travellers combined (68%).
This survey, which engaged over 6,000 respondents across 11 Asian markets, spotlights the evolving landscape of sustainable travel in Asia, where authentic and purposeful tourism, and off-peak travel are becoming more prominent.
Indian travellers are embracing sustainability with a strong emphasis on community impact and meaningful experiences. Close to a quarter of respondents (24%) chose personal values and beliefs as their top motivation for sustainable travel. Meanwhile, just over one in five travellers (21%), seek authentic and purposeful tourism. This reflects a growing movement towards travel that is not only meaningful but also enriching for both travellers and the destinations they visit.
The survey also found that many Indian travellers are making conscious choices to minimise their environmental impact, with 21% of respondents opting to travel during off-peak seasons to reduce overcrowding. Additionally, three actions received 16% of the votes each: choosing accommodations with sustainability certifications, using public transport or walking/biking instead of driving, and packing reusable items to minimise waste, like water bottles.
Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director India Subcontinent and MEA at Agoda, shared, “It’s great to see Indian travellers wanting to leave a positive impact, and Agoda is here to support their journey. Agoda’s Eco Deals program is designed to empower even more travellers to consider sustainability when planning their next trip. For every booking made on partnering properties in the program, Agoda donates one US dollar to local conversation projects. Travellers get to enjoy great savings while also helping to preserve the beauty and authenticity of the destinations they love for future generations.”
